This winter, the library is teeming with activity as always. In addition to our regularly scheduled programming, we are also offering a few new fun and creative opportunities for our beloved community.
We intend to get 2019 started off on the right track with a few entertaining events right around the corner. On Thursday, Jan. 3 at 3 p.m., we offer a cartoon workshop. Kids ages 8–12 can join art instructor Barbara Golden for a fun and engaging workshop and learn how to draw Manga, Pokemon, and Neopets characters. We can only take 15 kids for this event, so please register online at sonomalibrary.org or give us a call at 707-433-3772.
Next, we offer a repeat of the popular Winter Magic Show for families by Magician Mike on Friday, Jan. 4 at 10:30 a.m. All ages are welcome to come laugh, smile, and participate in this very special seasonal magic show. No sign-up required.
On Friday, Jan. 11, we have another event, this time for the preschool crowd. Come and “Make a Circle” with Maya Dorn, a children’s music artist on a mission to “uplift, heal and empower people of all ages.” Maya mixes it up with traditional favorites of children’s music as well as some songs of her own creation. Those participating can enjoy playing percussion instruments and waving scarves with the music. This event is for kids ages 0–5 and their families starting at 10:30 a.m.
Another event we’re excited about on Friday, Jan 11 is a new Vision Boarding event. Are you feeling inspired to try something new in 2019? Do you always have some abstract ideas for resolutions, but need something concrete to get you going? Vision Boards are poster boards that you create to visualize your intentions—what do you want to do? What do you want to achieve?  We’ll have art supplies and recycled magazines that you can use to create a collage. We hope this opportunity will help you envision your year and inspire you to take action.
Have you thought about joining our new adult-level book club? This month’s book is Lost at Sea by Jon Ronson. Author of The Psychopath Test and The Men Who Stare at Goats, Ronson has created a collection of short stories on a myriad of topics ranging from UFO conferences to the shady business of subprime loan targeting. The book club meets monthly on the second Tuesday at noon—it is a “brown bag” event, so feel free to bring your lunch. This discussion will take place on Jan. 8.
Our series of introductory Virtual Reality programs seems to have reached most of the people who wanted to give it a quick try, so we are exploring other options for VR events. The first of these is aimed at teens—we offer a Teen Virtual Lounge for those ages 14–18. This event will kick off on Jan. 15 from 4–6 p.m. You can drop by and play some games together with your friends using our big screen and Oculus Rift headset. Snacks will be provided. We require a signed waiver form to participate; for those under 18, we need the a parent or guardian to sign the form. For more information, please find our events online or contact us directly at 707-433-3772.
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events; for more information on what’s coming up, please refer to our website, find us on social media or stop by. We have flyers and a monthly calendar available. As always, all events are free at the public library. Happy New Year from all of us at the library.
Jon Haupt is the branch manager of the Healdsburg Regional Library.
