Windsor represented by four athletes at prestigious meet
Windsor senior Blake Fredrickson wrapped up a stellar high school wrestling career in winning fashion on Saturday, capturing a fifth place medal at the California Interscholastic Federation State Wrestling Championships.
The meet, held at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield on Feb. 21-23, for the first time also included a girls tournament running simultaneously.
The Jaguars were represented by four athletes, including two-time qualifiers Fredrickson and junior Trent Silva, along with freshman Carmen Perez and senior Dulce Chavez.
One week removed from winning his second straight North Coast Section title, the 115-pound Fredrickson won his first three preliminary matches to advance to the championship rounds on Saturday. There he lost to the No.1 seeded wrestler before coming back to win three more matches to earn a sixth-place medal. With his second medal (he was seventh last year), Fredrickson joins an elite list of Windsor High School wrestlers to earn state hardware in consecutive years.
Silva, who captured his second North Coast Section individual title at 147 pounds this year, bounced back from an opening round loss to win his next pair of state consolation matches before being eliminated.
Both Carmen Perez and Dulce Chavez suffered similar fates in their first trips to the state meet, with Perez going 1-2 while Chavez was 0-2 for the tournament.
