Dave Bane first to register
David Atkinson Bane was the first man in Healdsburg to register for military service under the draft of 18 to 45 years of age. Mr. Bane is going on a vacation and the registration was granted him as an accommodation. There are many employees away from their homes in the harvest fields of this section who must attend to their registration at once, that they may mail their cards to their home office, so that the record will reach its destination by September 12, Registration Day, from which place a receipt will be mailed to them by the local board of their home section. Call on J.M. Alexander at Healdsburg City Hall for transient registration.

River’s Bend reports on Healdsburg sales record
A report to real estate editors of various newspapers around the state describes the River’s Bend project — located off South Fitch Mountain Road east of Healdsburg. River’s Bend comes by its name since it is ideally situated where the Russian River meets the Redwood Highway at Healdsburg, and is surrounded by a magnificent view of Fitch Mountain. Only 118 homes will be built in this peaceful community, which escapes all the trials and tribulations of city living. If you are looking for a weekend retreat 69 miles from San Francisco, River’s Bend is your answer. Not only do you spend weekends, holidays, and vacations but you can be settled for retirement. River’s Bend is planned for active adult living, with (a requirement that) one person be 45 years of age. The pool has been installed, you can entertain in the clubhouse with kitchen facilities and lounge on the veranda of the clubhouse and enjoy the river action with swimming, boating, water skiing and the fisherman waiting for his big catch. If you have two for tennis, the court is yours. Prices start at $20,950.

Schools bulging at the seams
From the playground of Foss Creek School to the halls of Healdsburg High, school staff reported a particularly smooth opening day, in spite of burgeoning student populations. The bulge of students that started several years back at the elementary schools has definitely hit the secondary level. On the day before school, teachers who realized that their 37-student class lists didn’t jibe with their 32-desk classrooms were scrambling for extra chairs. HHS Assistant Principal Bob Harbaugh said the high school opted to forego its traditional first day of school assembly, primarily because they weren’t sure how to fit the entire student body into Smith Robinson Gymnasium. Locker assignments were being juggled as the freshman population exceeded the 384 lockers assigned to the freshman class.
