Handling Healdsburg’s large crops
“We want more women,” was the reply when a Tribune man asked for news at the cannery of the Healdsburg Preserving Company Tuesday morning. The cannery is a busy place and tomatoes are piled high at the receiving places. Marked improvements have been made at this cannery in anticipation of the big run of the present season. Labor-saving mechanical devices have been installed and it is an interesting study to follow the big red tomatoes from the time they enter the cannery to the point where they are stacked high in the bright tins ready for the labelers and for shipment to the eastern states and the war zone of Europe. The Preserving Company has invested a large amount of money in putting the plant in first-class shape for handling the tomatoes expeditiously and efficiently. About 50 hands are employed and more women are wanted.

Grape pickers needed by local growers
Grape pickers are desperately needed, according to Mrs. Elma Blasi, manager of the Healdsburg Farm Labor Office, 422 Healdsburg Ave. Growers need weekend family group workers as well as single pickers. Mrs. Blasi suggests that working in the grape harvest is an excellent way for housewives and students to earn Christmas money. The Healdsburg labor office will be open Saturdays from 7 a.m. until noon during the harvest.

High school will get $20,000 fence job
Responding to concerns from city police about outside troublemakers on the high school campus, school board officials have approved a plan to erect a fence on the northeast perimeter of the campus. Healdsburg High School trustees are scheduled to award a bid this week to fence in two sides of the HHS campus along University Street and Monte Vista Avenue. Estimates for the job are about $20,000 and will be paid through developer fees. The closed-in campus will make it easier for school personnel to supervise who is entering and exiting campus. The fencing is being undertaken, in part, as a result of a recommendation from the Healdsburg Police Department. There have been a number of incidents in the past of vandalism and burglary on the campus, as well as non-HHS students loitering on the campus. The six-foot high chain link fence will be black in order to make it less obtrusive. There will be unlocked entrances along the fences at four points.
