Light up the sky – By all accounts,
Healdsburg’s annual 4th of July fireworks show put on by the
American Legion was a big success. The show did stop for a few
minutes before the big finale when a small fire broke out at
Healdsburg High School when an ember from one of the fireworks
landed on a pile of debris near the tennis courts and greenhouse
building. The spot fire took about 30 seconds to contain, according
to Fire Chief Randy Collins. Former Fire Chief Bob Taylor was on
hand with reserve Chris D’Orazo, who put the flames out quickly.
After the flames were extinguished, the crowd cheered and clapped
for the firefighters. “That was the first time I’ve had a couple
thousand people applaud after putting out a fire,” Taylor said.
This was the first time since 1968 that a fire had been started by
the fireworks show, and even then, it was only a small fire
contained to about a 2 by 2-foot area.
