The line of redwoods that created a corridor from the main entrance, Prince Avenue, to the colorfully muraled Smith Robinson Gym is now gone. One of the dozen trees toppled over in a recent windstorm—no one was hurt and there was no damage, but it made all the more clear the importance of dealing with the hazard.

The affected routes are the three earliest departures from Windsor, headed southbound to Larkspur. Morning departure times scheduled at 4:35, 4:58 and 5:30am will be temporarily discontinued starting Monday, June 23. The first morning departure on weekdays will then become 6:02am. The reason: those damn train horns wake up the residents.

To look at the scoreboard of many recent Healdsburg Prune Packers games, one might think that’s softball being played on the field. On June 14, the Stockton Pearls fell 20-1, and the Bay Area Marauders went down 24-5 on June 15. These are scores more frequently found on diamonds where the bases are 60 feet apart, not 90. In softball, at least at the high school level, the “mercy rule” ends a game early if there’s a 10-point spread. No such rule affects collegiate baseball.

For the seventh time in eight years, young wrestlers traveled to Healdsburg last week to sharpen skills, compare notes and share their enthusiasm for the sport in the Drew Esquivel Memorial Wrestling Camp, held June 12-14 on the Healdsburg High campus.

Among this weekend's events is Taste of Sonoma, the long-running annual food and wine celebration from Sonoma County Tourism. It takes over Kendall-Jackson Wine Estate and Garden on Saturday from noon to 4pm. Over 100 wineries will participate, plus food trucks, a beer garden and more.

Then there's this: A scooter near the Memorial Beach Veterinary Hospital on Healdsburg Avenue was stopped for speeding. The driver was cited for driving on a suspended license, violating probation, lacking proof of insurance and driving without a license. More Police News ...

Both Wendy Cline, the facilities director, and chief executive officer Jennifer Weiss were excited by the prospect of the remodel. “Our amazing team is working quickly to bring this new incredible state-of-the-art clubhouse to our deserving kids and community,” Cline said. “This marks a significant step toward making our long-held dream a reality, creating a space where kids can thrive.”

While all the nominated plants are found in the area, Healdsburg Garden Club did limit its list to native plants, though some are widely found outside Healdsburg’s city limits. The proposal included four flowers: the Douglas iris, the yellow mariposa lily, scarlet fritillary and blue-eyed grass, the once ubiquitous California native grape, and the familiar oak trees of the region.

Healdsburg is full of food secrets. Someone knows who has the best mulberries (the word on the street is Preston and Millbrook Farms). Someone else swears by the broccoli at Noble Goat. There’s a bee person everyone keeps telling me I have to meet—and a seed guy, too.
