If you have your copy of the library newsletter, don’t bother to
read this, because it’s just a repetition of what’s there. You have
read your newsletter, haven’t you? And if you didn’t get a
newsletter, it’s because you aren’t a member of the Friends of the
Library. What possible excuse could you have for not being a
member? It’s $5 a year and the rewards are abundant and endurable
and you can join at the book sale or stop in any time at the
library and join. $5 a year. I swear.
The Book Sale is happening this month, starting Thursday, March
18. It’s members only that day, from 1 to 6 p.m., and no scanners
before 3 p.m. The next day, Friday the 19th, it’s members only
again from 11-1, then the doors are opened wide to the rest of the
world from 1 to 5. Saturday, is again for everyone, from 10-4, with
the $5 bag sale from 2 to 4. That’s where you get a grocery bag
full of books for $5, and you may get as many bags as you want.
Saturday, March 13 at 2 p.m.: Ernest Ongaro, a local man and
author of “Brands of California,” will describe brands and branding
methods and tools. He’ll also tell you the history of many brands
of Marin and Sonoma counties, starting in the 1800s. Ongaro has
spent his life caring for livestock, and knows them as well as
anyone alive. You’ll also learn a lot about local history, and are
welcome to ask questions.
Monday, March 22 at 7 p.m.: Duffy Hudson came last year as Edgar
Allan Poe and gave us all goose bumps. This year, he returns as
Albert Einstein to explain theories of relativity in a way that we
can not just understand, but enjoy.
Saturday, May 22, at 11 a.m.: Rebecca O’Connor, a renowned
speaker, author, conservationist—and one of the foremost
authorities on parrots and birding—will present a multi-media
program, “Winging It: Living a Life Shaped by Birds and Words.” Her
talk will include information about conservation efforts to help
raptors and waterfowl in and around our county. Her latest book,
“Lift,” is about falcons and falconry.
Tuesday, April 6 at 5 p.m.: Annual Meeting. All members are
welcome to join the board. Susan Swartz, author of “Juicy Tomatoes”
and Trib columnist, will be the guest speaker. As usual, we’ll have
a very brief business meeting at five, then kick back and enjoy
wine, hors d’oeuvres, and Susan. Come early to get a seat.
Word of the Day: Whale. Big mammals that live in the ocean and
plan to cruise our coast for the next few weeks. They are worth a
trip out there. Bring a picnic and warm clothes, find a high spot,
and be careful of the edge.
