The El Molino wrestling team continued to impress on the tournament circuit on Saturday, with its latest exploits coming in a frosh/soph, JV and varsity girls tournament at Vallejo High School.
The tourney featured 320 kids and used a round robin format, with freshmen, sophomores in their own brackets, while juniors and seniors competed in the JV bracket. The girls were in pooled weight brackets because there weren’t enough to run full brackets.
Garnering medals for the Lions were sophomores Erik Dimond (1st), Asher Weathersbee (2nd), freshman, Chance Martin (3rd); JV: Aiden Herman (2nd) and Jonathan Aguilar (3rd). Representing the girls were Hanna Ricioli (1st, 3-0, 3 pins, no points scored against her) and Ardenne “Chevy” Chevrolet (2nd, 2-1).
“We learned that we’re progressing well, and the kids are working hard,” El Mo coach Ron Wright reported. “We have a couple of more JV events this year, but we will be testing our mettle this Saturday (Dec. 8) at the San Marin Green and Gold tournament in Novato.”
The Lady Lions will be competing at the 19th Annual Roger Briones Tournament at San Leandro High School.
Josh Wright headed to state
Lions’ assistant coach and current Santa Rosa Junior College standout Josh Wright, wrestling in his first year with the Bear Cubs, finished fifth in his weight class at the CCCAA North Regional Tournament to qualify for the State tournament next weekend at Cerritos College.
