Cloverdale High School baseball and softball teams are nearing the finish line in league play this month, hoping to build momentum for what is hoped will be a strong postseason run.
At press time the varsity baseball Eagles were all alone in second place in the NCL-1 following recent wins over Lower Lake (6-3), and Middletown (8-1), pushing their league tally to 8-3 and 13-8 on the year. Cloverdale will wrap up the league schedule this week with home and away dates at Fort Bragg (May 5) and at St. Helena (May 8). All games start at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, the defending NCL-1 champion Lady Eagles softball team is locked in a virtual tie with Clear Lake atop the league standings with an 8-1 record and 13-4 overall, fresh off wins over Lower Lake (5-1) and Middletown (3-1). The ladies have four games left on the schedule beginning on May 5 against Fort Bragg, followed by a clash with visiting St. Helena on Friday, May 8. Cloverdale will visit Willits next Tuesday, May 12. First pitch for each game is 4 p.m.
Ladies win a pair
The Lady Eagles continued their winning ways last week, starting with an April 28 visit to Lower Lake. Cloverdale jumped on Trojans starter Shelbie Harris for a pair of runs in the first two innings for an early 4-0 lead. It was all ace hurler Teanne Edens needed, limiting Lower Lake to just one hit all afternoon en route to a 5-1 win.
Edens (7 IP, 1 hit, 0 ERs, 6 Ks) claimed the victory, while top hitters included Monica Lemley (3 for 4, run, 3 RBIs), Josie Marrufo (2 for 3, run), Jordyn Turner (1 for 3, run), Edens (1 for 4, RBI) and Bailey Creager (RBI).
The ladies were back at it on May 1 at Middletown, as Edens hooked up with Mustangs hurler Renee Edwards in a good pitchers duel. With Edens in command, the Eagles scratched for two runs in the first and added one in the sixth in an eventual 3-1 victory. Â
Edens (7 IP, 2 hits, 0 ERs, 12 Ks) earned her 13th win of the season, while top hitters were Creager (3 for 4, 2 2Bs, 2 RBIs), Turner (2 for 3, 3B, 2 runs, RBI), Lemley (2 for 4, run) and Marrufo (1 for 3). Â
Baseballers log wins
The Eagles were riding a good wave of momentum following a 6-3 victory at Lower Lake on April 28, and were out to make it four straight wins when they took the field at Middletown on Friday.
With pitcher Chris Harms throttling the Mustang offense, the Eagles mounted a strong hitting attack, resulting in an 8-1 victory. Top hitters included David Watson (2 for 3, 3B), Scott Richardson (2 for 4), Michael McDermott (1 for 2, 2B), Jon Alvarez (1 for 3), Mason Meier (1 for 3) and Greg Scaramella (1 for 5).
