Boys to host McMillan tourney; ladies compete in Potter Valley
The first full weekend in December means tournament time for Cloverdale High School basketball teams, with the Eagles varsity boys and girls hitting the court in a pair of annual happenings.
The boys (2-1) will host the 52nd annual John McMillan Holiday Invitational Tournament on Dec. 7-9, opening on Thursday, Dec. 7 in an 8 p.m. tip-off against Willows.
Last weekend, the Eagles kicked off the preseason schedule with two wins in three outings at the Redwood Classic Tournament in Booneville, recording impressive wins over Valley Christian (102-64) and league rival Clear Lake (72-54). Their lone loss came in a 64-45 setback to Woodside Priory.
The Eagles went over the century mark in points scored for the first time in years in the Nov. 29 tourney opener against Valley Christian, with five players scoring in double figures.
Top point producers included Jordan Persons (25 points, 6 rebounds), Ross Sceales (16 points, 2 boards, 6 assists), Drew Edens (14 points, 2 rebounds), Mario Lopez (13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals), Josh Lemley (12 points, 10 rebounds), Christian Chavez (7 points, 4 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals), Alex Segobiano (6 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal), Marcos Jimenez (4 points,1 rebound), Mel Alonso (3 points, 1 assist) and Shayne Turner (2 points, 2 rebounds).
Cloverdale weathered its first setback of the season on Dec. 1 against Woodside Priory, fighting an uphill battle most of the way in a 64-45 loss. Chavez led the offense (15 points, 3 rebounds), while other top scorers were Lemley (9 points, 5 rebounds), Persons (8 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists) and Lopez (4 points, 2 rebounds).
The Eagles squared off with Clear Lake in Saturday’s tourney getaway game, scoring a 72-54 win over the Cardinals. Top scorers were Persons (23), Sceales (15), Lemley (14) and Eli Arreola (8).
Ladies beat Greyhounds to open season
The Lady Eagles kicked off the season in winning form on Nov. 28, turning back visiting Healdsburg, 58-46. Cloverdale rode the hot hand of senior Camryn Figueroa in jumping out to a 19-7 first-quarter lead and played the Greyhounds on even terms the rest of the way to log their first win.
“We had 12 turnovers in our first game and gave up too many points in the fourth quarter,” CHS coach Rick Berry reported.
Pacing the Eagles’ offensive attack were Figueroa (18 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals), Kayli Persons (8 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 3 steals), Tehya Bird (8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals), Shaye Stewart (8 points, 5 boards, 1 assist), Heather Sterling (6 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists), Catherine Driver (5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists), Cassondra Bassett (2 points), Jaedyn Jenkins (1 point, 3 rebounds, 1 assist) and Maci Hernandez (2 rebounds, 1 assist).
The Lady Eagles (1-0) will hit the road for the Potter Valley Tournament on Dec. 6-9, opening on Wednesday, Dec. 6 against Anderson Valley (3:30 p.m.).
