The CHS JV boys are off to a great start to the winter basketball campaign, capturing the Clear Lake Tournament championship last weekend.
Led by head coach Julie Lawson and assistants Tyler Lawson and Trevor Andersen, the Eagles posted wins over Middletown, Colusa and Lower Lake to hoist the first-place trophy.
The Eagles fielded the youngest squad in the tournament, with a starting five that included four freshmen and one sophomore.
Cloverdale’s Gage Hoover led the offensive attack with a total of 70 points combined in all three games to garner Most Valuable Player honors. Also landing on the All-Tournament team were Jordan Persons, and Marcos Jimenez.
The Eagles got the party started in the tourney opener on Dec. 4, slipping past a strong Middletown contingent, 38-36. Hoover poured in a team-high 21 points. Other top scorers included Persons (9 points), Eli Arreola (4 points), and Ross Sceales (4 points).
Hoover and Persons were nearly unstoppable in Friday’s clash with Colusa, exploding for 27 and 25 points respectively to key a 67-58 win. Also in the Cloverdale scoring column were Arreola (6 points), Jimenez (5 points), BJ Grady (2 points), and Derick Rilea (2 points).
The Eagles squared off with Lower Lake on Saturday in a dog-fight for the tourney championship, as the Trojans nearly overcame a 17-point halftime deficit before Cloverdale pulled out an eventual 54-51 victory.
Hoover locked up MVP honors with a team-high 22 points.  Other big contributors were Persons (15 points), Arreola (9 points), Jimenez (3 points), Sceales (3 points), and Grady (2 points).
