Cloverdale will host St. Vincent this Friday at home
The varsity football Eagles are ready for home cooking this week after suffering their second straight road loss on Saturday – this one a 32-7 drubbing at the hands of Irvington.
The loss dropped Cloverdale to 0-2 on the season, with a Friday, Sept. 9 clash with visiting St. Vincent on the schedule. Kickoff times for the JV and varsity are 5 and 7:30 p.m.
The Mustangs (1-0) and Eagles have seen a lot of each other the past three seasons, with the Eagles scoring a 54-12 win over St. Vincent in their meeting last year. The Mustangs are coming off a 48-13 win over Elsie Allen in their season opener on Aug. 27.
The schedule has not been kind to the Eagles so far in opening the season with two losses by a combined score of 80-7, but the much-anticipated home opener might be just what the doctor ordered.
“Hopefully when we get our home blues on, good things will happen,” CHS head coach Chad Talley said. “We’re trying to find that first ‘W’ and sometimes that can be the toughest one.”
Game gets away late
Things started well enough for the Eagles in their Sept. 3 visit to Irvington in Fremont, as the team hung tough to trail by just a touchdown early in the third quarter.
Senior running back Tristen Rege, who churned up a season-high 102 yards on the ground, scored for the Eagles to close the gap to 14-7, but it would be the high water mark of the night for the visitors.
The Eagles shot themselves in the foot with three second-half turnovers, and the Vikings were more than happy to oblige as they scored on each possession. Irvington busted the game wide open in the final period en route to a 32-7 win.
“We were only down by a touchdown and had momentum, but we just didn’t execute when we needed to,” Talley said. “It was a team we could have beaten if we had just played better football.”
Rege turned in a stellar effort on both sides of the ball for the Eagles, while other defensive standouts included Will Foley (sack) and Brandon Grady.
