Horsehiders looking to break into win column this week
The varsity baseball Eagles came agonizingly close to their first season win on Saturday, dropping a 9-8 extra-inning heartbreaker to Lick-Wilmerding.
The non-league clash played at Skyline College in San Francisco was a tough pill to swallow for Cloverdale, which fell to 0-5 on the season.
Cloverdale will be back on the field this week with games at Clear Lake on Mar. 25 (after press time) and at Kelseyville this Friday, Mar. 28. The Eagles will be back in the friendly confines of City Park next Tuesday, Apr. 1 when they host visiting Willits. All games start at 4 p.m.
The March 22 meeting with Lick-Wilmerding was a wild roller-coaster ride, as the Eagles jumped out to a big early lead.
Cloverdale plated solo runs in the first and third innings before erupting for three more in the fourth for a seemingly comfortable 5-0 lead. The Wildcats had other ideas, clawing back with two runs in the fourth and three in the sixth to send it into extra innings knotted at 5-5.
Things looked good for the Eagles when they pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth for an 8-5 advantage, but Wilmerding pulled it out with a four-run rally in the bottom of the frame to escape with a 9-8 win.
The Eagles finished with eight runs on seven hits and two errors, while the ‘Cats had nine runs on nine hits and two errors. No individual stats were reported for Cloverdale.
