Cloverdale High School teams opened their respective league basketball schedules on Jan. 3, with both varsity boys and girls teams recording wins.
The varsity boys (9-4, 1-1) gained a split in a pair of outings, defeating visiting Middletown (45-37) before falling at Kelseyville (64-48). This week, the Eagles will host Fort Bragg on Jan. 10 (after press time) and visit Lower Lake on Friday, Jan.12 (7:30 p.m.).
Meanwhile the Lady Eagles (9-4, 2-0) made short work of both league opponents last week, scoring a 56-16 rout over Middletown before turning back Kelseyville, 39-34. The ladies will visit Fort Bragg on Jan. 10 and return home to host Lower Lake on Jan. 12 (7:30 p.m.).
Boys gain split
The Eagles were fresh off a tournament victory in the Orestimba Winter Classic week earlier when they took the court against visiting Middletown on Jan. 3, holding off the Mustangs in a 45-37 win. Freshman center Josh Lemley led the attack with 12 points and seven rebounds, while other top scorers included Christian Chavez (11 points, 2 assists, 2 steals), Ross Sceales (10 points, 7 boards), Jordan Persons (9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals) and Eli Arreola (3 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists).
The Eagles were locked in an uphill battle on Jan. 5 at Kelseyville, spotting the Knights a 20-16 lead after one and a 38-24 halftime advantage. Down by 20 after three, Cloverdale mounted a mild comeback before falling, 64-48. Persons led the offense with 20 points, adding three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Also in the scoring column were Lemley (16 points, 4 boards, 2 steals), Mario Lopez (5 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal), Sceales (5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) and Arreola (2 points, 1 rebound).
Ladies notch wins
The Lady Eagles wasted no time in their Jan. 3 opener at Middletown, racing to a 34-7 halftime lead en route to a 56-16 romp. Senior Camryn Figueroa was sensational with a team-high 26 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. Other top scorers were Tehya Bird (15 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal), Shaye Stewart (7 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal), Jaedyn Jenkins (6 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 2 steals), Maci Hernandez (2 points, 3 rebounds) and Kayli Persons (5 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals).
The girls engaged visiting Kelseyville in a tight battle on Friday, with the Knights taking a slim, 18-15 halftime lead. The Eagles regained the advantage with a 13-7 third-quarter run and held off a determined Kelseyville team to escape with a 39-34 win. Pacing the attack were Figueroa (16 points, 9 rebounds), Bird (13 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist), Jenkins (7 points, 5 boards, 1 assist, 3 steals), Hernandez (2 points, 1 rebound), Catherine Driver (1 point, 3 assists) and Stewart (5 rebounds, 2 steals).
