Boys log two wins; ladies drop a pair
It was a mixed bag on the league hard-court for Cloverdale High School basketball teams last week, as the varsity boy’s and girl’s squads combined for two wins in five outings.
The boys captured two of three games played, easily dispatching league opponents Clear Lake (55-38) and Kelseyville (43-33) before dropping a hard-fought 58-51 non-league decision to Fortuna.
At press time the Eagles (7-1, 14-5) had a one-game lead over Willits atop the NCL-1 standings, pending the outcome of upcoming games at Willits (Feb. 3) and home against Lower Lake on Friday, Feb. 6 (6/7:30 .m.).
The ladies (4-4, 9-7) are fresh off a pair of road losses to Clear Lake (49-46) and Kelseyville (44-33). Cloverdale has scheduled games this week against visiting Willits (Feb. 3) and at Lower Lake on Feb. 6 (6/7:30 p.m.).
Boys stay on top
The Eagles were in a dog-fight in their Jan. 27 home meeting with Clear Lake, as the visitors took advantage of Cloverdale’s slow start to grab a 31-26 lead at the half. The Eagles came out with defensive intensity after the break, holding their opponent to just seven points in the final two quarters, including a goose-egg in the final period en route to a 55-38 win.
Leading point-getters for Cloverdale were John McMillan (20), and Marcus Poe (16).
The Eagles played host to Kelseyville on Jan. 30, emerging from a tight first half to lead 18-17. Cloverdale’s defensive effort was enough to overcome its second-half shooting woes in the final two quarters to notch a 43-33 win.
Poe finished the night with a career-high 27 points while adding 13 rebounds.
“It was another great defensive game, but our offense continues to struggle,” Eagles coach Steve Bernardi noted, before adding, “Marcus (Poe) had an outstanding game.”
Cloverdale wrapped up a busy week with a non-league game against visiting Fortuna on Saturday, waging a good battle before the Huskies pulled away in the final period to win, 58-51. Pacing the attack were Poe (19 points, 12 rebounds), and Jayson McMillan (14 points, 10 rebounds).
Ladies fall to league foes
Cloverdale hit the road for the first of two away games on Jan. 27 at Clear Lake, coming up just short to drop a 49-46 heartbreaker. Breaking into the Eagle’s scoring column were Angel Bernardi (16), Teanne Edens (12), Ale Perez (6), Bailey Stewart (5), Karsyn Stewart (5), and Jaedyn Jenkins (2).
The ladies were back at it on Jan. 30 at Kelseyville, emerging from a slow start to trail 20-12 at the half.  The Eagles cut the deficit to five points heading into the final period but the Knights hung on for a 44-33 win.
Top scorers for Cloverdale were Perez (11), Bernardi (7), Edens (7), Karsyn Stewart (6), and Arianna Fernandez (2).
