Cloverdale dodges storms in abbreviated spring action
It’s been a weird start to the spring season for Cloverdale High School softball and baseball teams, with the Eagles’ schedules turned upside down due to a series of recent storms.
Both teams dodged wet weather to get in limited action during the past 10 days, as the Lady Eagles posted a 13-11 win over St. Joseph of Notre Dame on March 19 while the varsity boys notched a 7-2 win over Clear Lake on March 26.
Ladies unbeaten
The CHS softball team paid a visit to perennial power St. Joseph of Notre Dame on March 19, pushing across four runs in the first inning. The Eagles led 6-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth when the Pilots exploded for seven runs to take the lead. Not a problem, as Cloverdale rallied for three in the sixth and four in the seventh to escape with a 9-4 win.
Eagles’ sophomore pitcher Tehya Bird overcame numerous fielding errors behind her to fire seven innings to earn the victory, while collecting two hits and four runs batted in at the plate. Other top hitters for the Eagles included junior Heather Sterling (3 hits) and freshman Vanessa Fisher (2 hits).
Cloverdale (3-0) will resume non-league action on March 27 (after press time) against St. Vincent and open the NCL 1 schedule this Thursday, March 29 in a 4 p.m. tilt at Clear Lake.
