The end of the high school baseball and softball seasons signaled the announcement of 2019 all league teams, and Cloverdale athletes were among the most highly decorated in the NCL1 as voted on by coaches.
The league champion Eagles softball team landed an unprecedented eight players on this year’s all league squad, a validation of a tremendous spring campaign.
“Having eight players make all league was a great tribute to our team from our league coaches,” CHS veteran coach Margaret Fitzgerald said.
Heading the list for NCL1 softball was junior Tehya Bird, who was named league Most Valuable Player for the third straight season. The talented pitcher led the team in batting with a .754 batting average, including 15 doubles, 13 homers and 48 runs batted in. Bird was just as good on the mound, where she compiled a 23-1 record with 215 strikeouts in 144 innings for a 0.88 earned run average.
Joining her on the first team all league squad is senior infielder Heather Sterling (.459 BA, 41 runs, 15 RBIs), sophomore outfielder Janaye Hammond (.342, 21 runs, 29 RBIs) and junior catcher Lane Hughes (.434, 9 2Bs, 33 RBIs).
Second team honors went to senior third baseman Nicky Martinez (.310, 20 runs, 15 RBIs) and sophomore first baseman Kaylee King (.259, 11 runs). Landing on the honorable mention team was sophomore infielder Alyssa Moffett (.305, 17 runs, 15 RBIs) and sophomore outfielder Faith Holloman (.474, 29 runs, 6 RBIs).
Baseballers honored
The CHS varsity baseball team also had its share of representation on the NCL1 all league squad, including second team selections: sophomore first baseman Josh Lemley (.344, 11 runs, 5 2Bs, 12 RBIs) and senior pitcher Keller Sibert (3-5, 2.40 Era, 58.1 IP, 56 Ks).
Earning honorable mention honors were senior infielder Drew Edens (.333, 19 runs, 9 RBIs) and junior pitcher Dylan Scaramella (4-1, 1.84 ERA, 38 IP, 30 Ks).
