Artist Don Moore, 80, passed away June 15, 2007 at home in
Sebastopol. Born and raised in Newfoundland, Canada, Moore moved to
Denver, Colo. as a young man. He earned a degree in Applied Art at
the Denver Art Institute, then joined the U.S. Army and became an
Infantry Sergeant during the Korean War.
Moore settled in the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-1950s,
where he enjoyed a long career in the field of commercial art. He
specialized in illustration and design, handling prestigious
accounts for top-flight ad agencies and major corporations. In
1964, Moore served on the executive committee for the restoration
of San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts.
In the 1970s, Moore relocated to rural Sonoma County and worked
in the art department at The Press Democrat until he retired.
Creative and generous, he was active in civic programs, amateur
theater and social events, as well as art groups, guilds and
galleries.
An award-winning painter, Moore’s watercolor landscapes are
treasured in numerous private collections. Commented one admirer,
&#8220In the hands of Don Moore … the craft of transparent
watercolor painting becomes a symphony in sight. Moore’s view is
the eye of the heart. His technique might be loosely termed as
‘delicate crudeness’ … but at one instant he co-mingles humility
and power so spontaneously that he delivers to us the very essence
of his subject … a romance with watercolor.”
Moore is survived by his brother Kevin M. Moore, sisters Amy
Bjelajac and Anne Marie Moore, sons David L. Moore and Kevin M.
Moore, daughter Sharon Marie Axtman, five grandchildren and a few
great-grandchildren.
No service will be held.
Donations in Moore’s memory may be made to The Harriet Fund for
spaying and neutering strays at the Sebastopol Animal Hospital,
where Moore adopted his dog Pooker, a companion of 17 years.
