Babe Ruth squad included several local players
The Diamondbacks made it three straight in Babe Ruth League baseball this month, capturing their third straight North Bay League championship.
Led by veteran coach Herm Tappin and assistant coach Kamana Pearl, the team was a collection of some of the top 13-16 year-old players in Sonoma County, including several local stars from Windsor.
“I’ve coached 45 teams and this was one of my favorite teams I have ever coached,” Tappin said. “They were very coachable, had great attitudes and loved baseball. We need these types of kids to keep baseball going in our country,” he added.
Compiling an overall record of 12-2-1, the Diamondbacks steamrolled opponents in the league playoffs, winning on the 10-run rule in each game.
The D-Backs were a well-oiled machine on offense, carrying a gaudy .378 team batting average while scoring at an impressive clip of 11.4 runs per game while allowing just 4.2. Five players hit .300 or better. Top hitters were Nick Roland (.657 batting average, 26 runs, 32 steals) and Phillip Tappin (.600 batting average, 34 RBIs in 15 games).
The D-Backs also did it with outstanding pitching, with Spencer Meiburg leading the staff with an unbeaten record of 6-0.
Rounding out the roster were Caden Bugarske, Alakai Pearl, and Daniel Reese, Xander Reed, Andrew Campbell, Austin Catania, Marcos Milano and Andy Mokski.
