Derek Shelton died Nov. 8, 2007 after a long battle with
Leukemia. He was 64. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Betty
and his son Brook. Also surviving are granddaughters Bronte and
Harmony and many other family members and friends. Shelton was
predeceased by his daughter Kimberly Merritt.
Shelton graduated from Healdsburg High School and was elected to
its sports Hall of Fame for accomplishments in football, basketball
and baseball. He played football and baseball at Santa Rosa Junior
College and Redlands University where he also was elected to its
Hall of Fame for numerous records set in baseball. Later in life he
devoted his athletic abilities to perfecting his golf game and
spent many happy hours on the course.
Shelton was born in Long Beach but moved to Sebastopol as a
young boy and attended Analy High School before transferring to
Healdsburg where he graduated in 1961.
Shelton went to work for Allstate Insurance immediately after
graduating from college and owned an insurance agency with the
firm, retiring in 2001.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at
Pleasant Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary in Sebastopol.
