The CHS varsity baseball Eagles remain in hot pursuit of their first season win after suffering another pair of pre-league setbacks last week.
The Eagles, who opened the season with losses to Fortuna (4-1) and St. Mary’s (14-1), dropped a pair of road games to Ukiah (13-0) and Healdsburg (8-5) last week in pushing their record to 0-4.
Cloverdale will be back on the diamond this Saturday, Mar. 22 when they visit Lick Wilmerding at Skyline College at 12 p.m. The Eagles will open the NCL-1 schedule on Tuesday, Mar. 25 at Clear Lake. First pitch is 4 p.m.
Eagles head coach Keith Warner fields a 13-man squad this season, led by seniors; first-baseman Josh Holden, pitcher/OF Isiah Warren, and pitcher/OF Logan Tate. Juniors include; outfielder Nick Scallabrini, SS/P Greg Scaramella, pitcher Scott Richardson, catcher Steele Essick, utility-man Jacob McDonald, outfielder Sam Swan, outfielder Damon McKinney, outfielder John Janey, utility-man David Watson, and pitcher/infielder Jonathon Alvarez.
Assisting Warner are coaches Kagen Davis and Randy Hibbeln. Â
Eagles grounded by ‘Cats, Hounds Â
The Mar. 12 trip to Ukiah didn’t go as planned, as the Wildcats exploded for 13 runs in the fateful third in an eventual 13-0 win in five-innings (no stats reported). Â
The Eagles were forced to play from behind again the following night at Healdsburg, where they spotted the Greyhounds an 8-1 cushion after four frames. Cloverdale battled back with a rally late in the contest but would eventually fall 8-5. Â
JV notches wins
The Cloverdale JV squad enjoyed a winning stretch last week, scoring victories over Ukiah (9-7) and Healdsburg (6-0).
Starting pitcher Michael McDermott went five innings against the Wildcats allowing two runs and three walks while fanning four before handing the ball to Jared Hibbeln in relief.
Top hitters for the Eagles included Angel Vega (2 for 5, 2B, RBI), Hibbeln (3 for 4, 2 RBIs), Mason Meier (2 for 5, 3 RBIs), Chris Harms (1 for 4, RBI), Cole Stroh (1 for 4), Jeff Persons (1 for 3), Nick Menzal (1 for 3, RBI), and Mason Kostoff (1 for 2, RBI).
The Eagles closed out a great week on Mar. 13 at Healdsburg, riding the strong arm of pitcher Chris Harms in a 6-0 shutout win. Harms was dominant, tossing a complete-game while fanning a season-high 12 batters. Pacing the hitting corps were Hibbeln (3 for 4, 2B, 3 RBIs), Vega (2 for 3, 2B), Meier (1 for 3), Pat Ojeda (2 for 3, RBI), and Harms (1 for 4, RBI).
