The St. Helena Saints almost made it to Cloverdale. However, after they had two different buses break down on them Tuesday night, their North Central League I varsity girls basketball game against the host Eagles was postponed.
It was the second time in a week that the Eagles had a league contest postponed. Their Jan. 10 game at Middletown was wiped out by a major winter storm that hit the area but was played the following night. Cloverdale head coach Rick Berry said he was hoping to make up the St. Helena game on Wednesday night but said the Saints were unable to obtain transportation. Instead, the game will take place tonight in Cloverdale beginning with the junior varsity contest at 5:30 p.m., according to Berry.
Cloverdale, 2-2 in the league standings, also hits the road on Friday night to visit Lower Lake where the first-place Trojans (4-0) will be waiting. Junior varsity action tips off at 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow. Lower Lake was scheduled to play Wednesday night at Fort Bragg (0-4).
The Saints’ odyssey on Tuesday began with a bus breaking down in St. Helena. The JV and varsity players transferred to a second bus that broke down on Highway 101 near Lytton Springs, just north of Healdsburg.
“If I would have known that I would sent vans to pick them up,” Berry said of the St. Helena players.
While there was no game for the Cloverdale JV and varsity girls on Tuesday, the varsity boys won their fourth straight league game, beating the Saints 70-46 in St. Helena. The Eagles and Kelseyville Knights are currently tied for the league lead at 4-1 followed by Fort Bragg at 3-1. Clear Lake and St. Helena are both 2-2.
Cloverdale’s JV and varsity boys host Lower Lake on Friday beginning with the JV game at 6 p.m.
The Reveille will review the current week for the varsity boys and girls in the next print edition on Jan. 26.
