Hounds take 4-3 record into holiday break
The varsity basketball Eagles continued their hot start in a pre-league clash on Dec. 17, racing past the host Healdsburg Greyhounds, 49-30.
The win pushed Cloverdale’s season record to 6-1, while Healdsburg fell to 4-3.
The Eagles will take a break from competition this week but will resume pre-league action on Dec. 28-30 when they take the court in the annual Sonoma County Classic Tournament hosted by Piner High School in Santa Rosa.
Cloverdale will open the SCC tourney on Monday, Dec. 28 (time and opponent TBD).
Eagles turn back Hounds
Cloverdale entered the Dec. 17 clash with Healdsburg loaded with momentum following a repeat win at the 50th John McMillan Holiday Tournament a week earlier, and followed up with a good showing against the Greyhounds.
Fueled by a solid defensive effort, the Eagles took early control in taking a 13-7 lead at the end of one. The teams traded buckets in a low scoring second period as Cloverdale took a 22-15 edge into the halftime locker room.
The Eagles gained separation with a 19-8 run in the critical third quarter for a 16-point cushion, and held the Greyhounds to seven points in the final period en route to a 49-30 win.
The 30-point output represents the lowest scoring total for the Hounds this season.
Senior forward Marcus Poe led the Eagles attack with 16 points, while teammate Jayson McMillan chipped in 10 for Cloverdale. Juan Aguilar led the Hounds with a team-high 15 points.
Ladies back in action
The Lady Eagles (6-1) are coming off a weeklong hiatus due to finals, but at press time were preparing for a Dec. 22 date with Roseland University Prep. Cloverdale will compete in the annual West Coast Jamboree in the East Bay on Dec. 28-30 (times TBD).
