Eagles’ bats come alive in run-scoring barrage
The Lady Eagles continued their assault on the high school softball opposition this week, recording dominant victories over Willits (21-1), St. Vincent (8-2) and Kelseyville (14-4).
The wins pushed Cloverdale’s unbeaten record to 3-0 in league and 9-0 on the season.
The common theme in each game has been offense, with the Eagles pounding out a combined 37 hits for 43 runs in what can only be described as a dominant start to the spring campaign.
Cloverdale will try to keep it rolling this week, weather permitting, when they visit Fort Bragg on April 2 (after press time) and host Middletown on Friday, April 5 at 4 p.m. The ladies will visit Salesian in a non-league make-up game this Saturday, April 6 in a 1 p.m. start and entertain St. Helena on Tuesday, April 9 at 4 p.m.
Eagles swing the bats
Cloverdale made short work of their March 26 visit to Willits, dismantling the Wolverines’ pitching for four runs in the first two frames, followed by a nine-run explosion in the fourth to force an early stoppage in a 21-1 rout.
Tehya Bird (4 IP, 2 hits, ER, 7 Ks) and Vanessa Fisher (1 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 2 Ks) shared pitching duties while top hitters included Bird (4 for 4, 2B, HR, 3 runs, 6 RBIs), Fisher (2 for 5, 2B, 2 runs, RBI), Lane Hughes (2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBIs), Janaye Hammond (2 for 4, 2B, 3 runs, 2 RBIs), Nicky Martinez (1 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Heather Sterling (1 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Kayli King (1 for 3, run, RBI) and Ahnna Randolph (1 for 1).
The Eagles traveled to St. Vincent on March 27 in the second season meeting between teams, getting home runs off the bat of Fisher and Bird to power the team to an 8-2 win. Bird (7 IP, 5 hits, 2 ERs, 4 Ks) was solid in victory, while leading hitters included Bird (3 for 4, 2 2Bs, HR, 3 runs, 3 RBIs), Fisher (2 for 4, HR, run, 5 RBIs), Hughes (2 for 4), Alyssa Moffet (1 for 3), Sterling (1 for 4, run) and Martinez (1 for 2, run).
It was more of the same in Friday’s home clash with Kelseyville, with the Eagles setting the tone with seven runs in the first inning en route to a 14-4 rout in five innings. Bird (3 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs. 8 Ks) and Fisher (2 IP, 1 hit, ER, 3 Ks) were masterful, while top hitters were Hammond (3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs), Fisher (2 for 4, 2 2Bs, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Sterling (2 for 3, run, 2 RBIs) and Maci Hernandez (1 for 2, 2B).
