Ladies beat St. Helena, boys win a pair
The Eagles kept pace atop the NCL-1 boys basketball standings last week, claiming wins against Fort Bragg (69-45) and St. Helena (53-39).
The victories kept Cloverdale tied for first place with Willits at 5-1, pushing their overall record to 12-4. At press time the Eagles were preparing to host Clear Lake on Jan. 27, followed by a critical Friday, Jan. 30 home date with Kelseyville. Tip-off times for the JV and varsity are 6 and 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile the Lady Eagles (4-2, 9-5) had a mixed bag on the league hard-court last week, bouncing back from a 52-36 road loss to Fort Bragg with a 48-19 home romp over St. Helena. The ladies finished the stretch on Saturday with a hard-fought 56-51 non-league setback to visiting St. Bernard’s. Â
At the start of play this week Cloverdale was in a three-way tie for second place in league at 4-2, one game back of first-place Middletown. The Lady Eagles will play road games at Clear Lake (Jan. 27) and Kelseyville (Jan. 30, 6/7:30 p.m.), and come home to host Willits next Tuesday, Feb. 3 (6/7:30 .m.). Â
Boys notch wins
Cloverdale squared off with Fort Bragg on Jan. 20, emerging from a 15-all game to grab a 34-27 lead at the half. The Eagles busted it wide open in a 23-6 third-quarter run and never looked back in an eventual 69-45 win.
Marcus Poe turned in an outstanding outing, hitting 10 of 11 shots from the field in a 21-point, 11 rebound effort. Other top scorers included Jayson McMillan (13 points, 6 boards, 2 assists), John McMillan (12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals), Greg Scaramella (8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals), Luke Pope (6 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist), Adrian Bernardi (4 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal), Michael McDermott (4 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist), and Angel Vega (1 point, 1 rebound, 2 assists).  Â
The Eagles paid St. Helena a visit on Friday, taking charge from the opening tip in racing to a 29-18 halftime lead. Cloverdale maintained the lead after intermission en route to a 53-39 win.
Top scorers were Poe (20 points), John McMillan (10 points), Travis Kitowski (9 points), Jayson McMillan (6 points), Pope (3 points), and two points from Bernardi and Vega.
Ladies notch win Â
The Lady Eagles tipped off against Fort Bragg on Jan. 20, a game that was tight throughout and finally decided in the waning seconds. Cloverdale trailed 30-28 after three quarters, but the T-Wolves exploded for 22 points in the final period to secure a 52-46 win. Pacing the Eagle’s offense were Angel Bernardi (13 points), and Ale Perez (11 points).
Cloverdale was back in the win column in a Jan. 23 home clash with St. Helena, racing to a decisive 36-15 halftime lead en route to a 48-19 rout. Pacing the attack were Angel Bernardi (12 points) and Teanne Edens (11 points). Â
The Eagles wrapped up a busy week with a Jan. 24 battle with visiting St. Bernard’s, spotting the Crusaders a six-point halftime lead. Cloverdale hung tough in the final two quarters, but the visitors did just enough to pull out a 56-51 victory. Although no official scorers were reported, top point-getters for the Eagles were Edens, Bernardi, and Bailey Stewart.
