Something really awful happened on the freeway just south of Healdsburg a couple of nights ago. A man was killed in the wee hours while walking along the northbound 101 between the Airport and Shiloh exits, according to the California Highway Patrol. Here’s the full report issued by the CHP yesterday: “This morning, March 1, at 2:28am, Santa Rosa CHP officers responded to a crash on US-101 northbound, north of Airport Boulevard. It was reported that a vehicle struck a pedestrian. CHP and Sonoma County Fire personnel arrived on scene and the adult male pedestrian was pronounced deceased. Preliminary investigation indicates a Toyota Camry was being driven northbound on US-101 in the middle lane. The pedestrian was walking in the traffic lanes from the right side of the roadway towards the center median when the collision occurred. The Toyota driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Officers determined he was not under the influence. US-101 northbound was closed during the investigation and reopened at approximately 4:30am. All inquiries about the deceased should be directed to the Sonoma County Sheriff Coroners office.
