Team runs table to finish season with perfect 9-0 record
The Cali Calmecac 6th grade boys completed a perfect basketball campaign on April 27, turning back Hillcrest Middle School in the tournament championship game in overtime, 49-47.
The tournament began with wins over Lawrence Jones Middle School (Rohnert Park) and Windsor Middle School, with the victory in the finale giving Cali a final season record of 9-0.
Led by head coach Francisco Flores, the squad included players Seth Zahner, Joey Meza, Sam Vandenheuvel, Gabriel Smith, Liam Morrison, Madison Reyes, Jayce Toupin, Henry Luevano, Sam Chatfield, Javier Berrios, Davis Beeler, Andrew Simmalaychanh, Rigoberto Canchola and Antonio Madrigal.
Making the season even more remarkable was the fact that Flores had never played or coached the game of basketball before this season, learning technique and strategy on the fly watching Youtube videos.
