The Sebastopol Brewers put the wraps on an outstanding summer
campaign last weekend with participation in the Joe DiMaggio League
World Series held in Burlingame.
The Brew Crew (15-9) posted one win in three outings in the
tournament, as they beat Nevada/Reno, 7-6, and fell to San Carlos,
10-1 and Millbrae, 10-7.
“All of the teams we faced were all-stars from combined
schools,” said Brewers¹ coach Scott Barnes. “We were right there
with them. It bodes well for our team next year.²
The highlight of the tournament came on Friday night against the
Reno Muckdogs, as the Brewers came from behind with a dramatic,
two-out, five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to post
a 7-6 victory. Nick Barnes was the man of the hour, as he drove in
Mitch Hackwood with the winning run.
Brad Graham fired six solid innings and fanned four before
giving way to reliever Jim Conover, who tossed a scoreless seventh
to notch the victory. Leading the hitting corps were Barnes (2 for
3, 2B), Hackwood (2 for 4 2B) and Tom Walker (2 for 3, 2B).
On Saturday, the Brew Crew took on defending champion San
Carlos, falling 10-1. Facing outstanding pitching, the Brewers
managed just a pair of hits, one each from Cameron Cook and Walker.
Sebastopol hurler Dana Amundsen took the loss, while relievers
Hackwood and Max Nakabiashi closed it out in mop-up duty.
The Brewers wrapped up their season on Sunday in a 10-7 loss to
Millbrae. Conover started the game, tossing five innings before
handing the ball to relievers Cook and Nakabiashi, who combined for
a pair of scoreless innings. Cook led Sebastopol¹s six-hit attack
with two hits in four trips, including a double.
