A great Joe DiMaggio League summer campaign got even better on
Monday, when the Analy squad (AKA the Sebastopol Brewers) beat
Vallejo, 7-5 in the league playoffs to advance to the Joe ³D² World
Series.
The victory was the second in three outings last weekend for the
Brewers, who also beat Vacaville, 1-0 and fell to Sonoma, 1-0 in
the Joe DiMaggio playoffs held at the Yountville Veteran¹s Home
park. Sebastopol (14-7) will make its first-ever trip to the World
Series, which starts this Friday, July 21 at Washington Park in
Burlingame (game time TBA).
³Our goal as a team this year was to make the playoffs and now
we¹re advancing to the World Series,² said Brewers coach Scott
Barnes. It¹s a great experience for our players.²
Brew Crew take two of three in Yountville
Sebastopol¹s Brad Graham climbed the hill in the Joe ³D² playoff
opener against Vacaville on Saturday, responding with a 66-pitch,
complete game gem. The Brewers¹ lone run came when Tom Walker drove
in Ryan McCown on a sacrifice fly for the eventual 1-0 win. Graham
made the lead stick, scattering six hits while fanning one to notch
the victory. The defensive player of the game was Walker, who
recorded 12 assists at shortstop in an error-free game. Leading a
five-hit attack were McCown (2 for 3, 2B) and Jim Conover (2 for
3).
Dana Amundsen toed the slab in Sunday¹s clash with Sonoma,
tossing six strong innings, yielding five hits and just one run
before giving way to reliever Nick Mutz in the seventh. Despite
seven hits, Sebastopol was held scoreless and fell, 1-0. Leading
the offensive charge were Conover (2 for 2), Nick Barnes (2 for 4),
Xavier Garcia (2 for 3) and Walker (1 for 4, 2B).
The Brewers came into Monday¹s game against Vallejo needing a
win to advance to the Joe ³D² World Series. Xavier Garcia got the
start for the locals, tossing two-plus innings before giving way to
Taylor Berenyi in the third. The Brewers trailed 5-2 entering the
fourth inning, when their bats suddenly came alive.
Consecutive hits by Conover, Walker, Cameron Cook and Barnes led
to a three-run rally, knotting the contest at five-all. Mutz
followed with a two-run triple to dead center, scoring another pair
of runs for a 7-5 Brewer lead. Berenyi, enroute to an
eight-strikeout performance, shut Vallejo down the rest of the way
to notch the two-run victory. Leading hitters were Conover (3 for
3), Cook (3 for 4, 2B), Walker (3 for 4 2B) and Mutz (2 for 4, 2B,
3B).
Lions put wraps on summer season
El Molino wrapped up a very busy summer campaign on Wednesday,
falling to Santa Rosa, 7-6 in eight innings. The loss gave the
Lions a final summer record of 7-19.
³We generally hit decently this summer, but had a team ERA of
7.00 and committed an average of 3.45 errors per game and that
doesn¹t win baseball games at most levels, especially high school,²
noted El Mo coach John Thomas. ³We need to get players to
understand that pitching and defense are the most important part of
the game.²
Evan Englar turned in one of his best outings of the summer
campaign on Wednesday, tossing seven innings, allowing seven hits
while fanning seven before giving way to reliever Tony Demarco.
Santa Rosa pushed across the winning run in the eighth when a hit
batsman, single and suicide squeeze was all they needed to post a
7-6 victory. Swinging hot bats for the Lions were Jon Uresti (3 for
4, 2B, 4 RBIs), Bret Williams (3 for 4), Englar (1 for 4), Jon
Canelis (1 for 5), John Sundberg (1 for 5) and Demarco (1 for
1).
