The Windsor High School boys lacrosse team has been the epitome of hard work and commitment this season, battling opponents tooth and nail as the team makes incremental improvements.
Led by first-year head coach Scott Goodfellow, Windsor is off to a 1-7 start to the league season and 1-9 overall, their lone win coming in an 8-4 victory over Sonoma Academy on March 25.
The Jaguars have been competitive in nearly every contest this season, but have not been rewarded with many wins so far.
“We’ve been in every game but have had a hard time getting wins,” Goodfellow said.
Windsor, which played nearly all home games in the first half of the season, will need to be road warriors in the second half, with all away matches scheduled due to construction on being done in the friendly confines.
The Jags opened the second half of the campaign with a pair of outings last week, beginning with an April 3 visit to unbeaten, first-place Casa Grande. The Gauchos showed why they’re the class of the Redwood Empire, scoring early and often in a 16-0 shutout victory.
Windsor was back at it two nights later at Cardinal Newman, this time making a game of it to trail 10-5 at the half. The Jaguars cut the deficit to 12-9 after three quarters but would come up a little short as the Cardinals closed out a 15-9 win.
Goal scorers for the Jags included Scout Gugel (4), Ethan Kat-Kuoy, Lukas Payne, Jaden Ruybalid, Andy Dutton and Dustin Smith. Assists went to Gugel (2) and Payne.
The Jaguars will resume play at Sir Francis Drake on April 9 (after press time) and visit Rancho Cotate on Thursday, April 11 (7 p.m.). Windsor will travel to Petaluma on Wednesday, April 17 (7 p.m.).
Ladies log wins
The Lady Jaguars (5-3, 5-5) continued to roll on the league lacrosse circuit, rebounding from a hard-fought 17-9 loss at Casa Grande on April 2 with subsequent road wins over Rancho Cotate (15-10) and Petaluma (10-6).
High scorers against the Cougars were Elka Piotter (3), Hailey Toste (3), Mary Sweeney (3), Katie Todd (2) and Ashley McBride (2).
Finding the net against the Trojans were Piotter (3), Toste (3), Ashlee Crowley (1), Nicole Mattos (1), Sweeney (1) and Callie Cooper (1).
This week’s matches included trips to Cardinal Newman (April 9), Petaluma (April 11) and Justin Siena (April 16). All matches start at 7 p.m.
