With the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair this week comes
the revival of an old tradition, The Healdsburg Barn Dance.
The Healdsburg 20-30 Club introduced the original barn dance
back in the 1040’s as a fundraiser for Rheumatic Fever. Club
organizers hosted the country-dance night at the American Legion
Hall where CVS Drugstore now sits.
“It didn’t look much like a barn,” laughed Holly Hoods from The
Healdsburg Museum as she pulled up a photograph of the large hall
from the museum archives.
Active 20-30 International is a non-profit organization that
raises money for community causes and has chapters across the U.S.
and Canada. The Healdsburg chapter was originally founded in the
1938 but had to dissolve around the Vietnam War due to the high
number of members leaving for war. The club officially re-chartered
November 12, 2010.
“Joining Active 20-30 provides a healthy balance between
contributing time and energy to our local community while also
providing a social network of like-minded people that develop into
life-long friendships,” Healdsburg Club President Dan Chapin
said.
Since November, the club has held monthly meetings and several
fundraisers to support youth programs in Healdsburg. The Barn Dance
event will donate proceeds to the Future Farmers of America Club at
Healdsburg High School.
“As we were planning our fundraisers for the year, reviving the
barn dance was first on the list” said Chapin. “We chose the FFA
Club as the donation recipient because we want to see kids in
Healdsburg sustain the agriculture in our community and to keep
kids in the community. Also, it is a natural fit with the theme of
the event.”
Chapin said that the idea for the event came after the Santa
Rosa 20-30 Club Chapter President Dana von Sternberg found an old
poster from one of the original barn dances on eBay and purchased
it as a gift for the Healdsburg club. The poster has since been
gifted to The Healdsburg Museum.
“This is something we would really like to bring back every
year,” said Chapin. “We want to raise money for the kids in the
community and as a side note, I really like the culture of Ag
families and music is a big part of that.”
The Barn Dance will be held at Trione Winery in Geyserville
featuring live music by The Old Boot Band. Tickets can be purchased
in advance for $20 or at the door for $30. Entrance fee includes
raffle tickets, a food ticket and a drink ticket.
