With the mass evacuations of Healdsburg and Windsor a wide range of activities from high school sports games to Halloween itself (and related activities) were disrupted. As normalcy returns to the area, several of those activities are preparing to have a do-over.
Healdsburg thanks first responders
Join your neighbors this Friday, Nov. 8, to thank our first responders. This event will coincide with the Downtown Trick-or-Treat. The celebration of gratitude takes place at 5 p.m. in the Plaza. There will also be live music and kids’ activities from 4 to 6 p.m.
Halloween Redo
Both Windsor and Healdsburg are known for their Halloween activities, from costume parades to trick-or-treating at business around the Town Green and Windsor and the Plaza in Healdsburg. While both towns held some trick-or-treating on Oct. 31 and over the weekend, both are offering a second chance this coming weekend.
Windsor is doing Halloween Take Two! Where locals are asked to turn on their porch lights from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 if they are handing out candy as per a normal Halloween.
While participants will undoubtedly cover all areas of the town, Sonoma County Strong has compiled a list of participating streets, including Decanter Circle, Jessica Drive, Pollard Way, Flametree Circle, Cornell Street, Foothill Drive, Shagbark Street, Claudius Way, Cottontail Way, Hastings Place, Jane Drive, Natalie Drive, Princess Way, Rochioli Drive, Trione Circle, Woodglen Court, Baldocchi Way, Bluebird Drive, Canyon Oak Drive, Chablis Drive, Dartmouth Way, Jennifer Lane, La Contenta Court, Miramonte Street, North Hampton Drive, Pedroncelli Drive, Savannah Way, Shannon Court, Valencia Way, Wilson Lane and Winemaker Way.
In Healdsburg, the Downtown Healdsburg Trick or Treat will take place Friday, Nov. 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. Downtown businesses will be handing out candy to trick or treaters and Healdsburg Community Services will have some spooky family activities in the Plaza along with fun activities like face painting.
Neither Healdsburg’s annual Howl-o-ween Pet Parade nor the We Foundation Harvest Festival in Windsor have been rescheduled for this year as of press time.
Sports returns
Faced with the fires, on Oct. 30 the North Coast Section issued a ruling that pushed back the football playoff schedule a full week, with divisional playoffs now beginning Nov. 15.
Nov. 9 will see the rescheduled final home for Windsor High School, along with their annual Senior Night, where senior athletes are celebrated as their season draws to close. WHS will play Maria Carillo in a bid for glory.
The game will also honors veterans and first repsonders, and members of both groups can get in free with ID. They will be honored alongside the seniors at halftime. The game kicks off in the Robert Kirkpatrick Stadium at Windsor High School with JV at 4:30 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
In Healdsburg, the Greyhounds will play their rescheduled home finale against Montgomery on Friday, Nov. 8 at Recreations Park. JV kicks off at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.
The cross country season came to a premature end, with the North Bay League calling it over as of the evacuations, but championships will start Nov. 8 with the Oak division finals at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa at 2 p.m., followed by the Redwood division finals the next day. The Greyhounds will be running on Nov. 8 and the Jaguars on Nov. 9.
The Jaguars volleyball team was forced to forfeit their spot in the NCS Division 2 playoff due to evacuations. The Greyhounds played their Division 4 playoff match, but fell to Head Royce of Oakland.
Government back in action
Public meetings in Healdsburg got back underway with the city council on Nov. 4 and Windsor will resume Nov. 6 with a regular town council meeting.
All Town of Windsor recreation programs resumed as scheduled on Monday, Nov. 4, including the preschool programs. For questions regarding any recreation programs, call 707-838-1260, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Windsor schools resumed Thursday, Nov. 7.
Healdsburg’s schools opened on Wednesday, Nov. 6, including the preschool program.
Windsor’s garbage service resumed Nov. 1. Extra bags placed next to your receptacles will be picked up through Friday, Nov. 8, at no extra charge. Please avoid placing wet, leaking containers in bags that do not go into your containers. For additional trash collection information, refer to Sonoma County Resource Recovery at sonomacorr.com.
Healdsburg’s garbage service also resumed on Nov. 1, but provides the following additional guidance: “Compost: Please remember to compost all spoiled food. We created a short video about that: youtu.be/H52ugdP3Gr8. Commercial Food Waste: Restaurants and food establishments with excess food to compost can contact Recology for an additional Saturday pickup: 1-800-243-0291. Otherwise, all solid waste service is back to regular schedule.”
