School board endorsements
As the election draws closer, Brad Freeland, the chapter president for Windsor 673 of the California School Employees Association, informs me that after a meeting with all the candidates for the Windsor Unified School District Board of Trustees, Windsor 673 has decided to endorse incumbents Eric Heitz and Sandra Dobbins, and newcomer Stephanie Ahmad for the three available seats on the board. No word yet from the teachers’ union.
Tutors needed
If you have a spare 30 minutes each week to change a kid’s life, Schools of Hope is looking for volunteers in Windsor.
Schools of Hope is an “early grade reading initiative that helps children build the critical reading skills needed to succeed in school and life,” according to United Way of the Wine Country. “Through Schools of Hope, the tutor works one-on-one with kindergarten through third grade students during the school day to supplement the work they are doing in the classroom.”
In Windsor the program takes places at Windsor Creek Elementary and is focused on third graders. Training and materials are provided, contact Community Benefit Coordinator Ana Gouveia at 707-528-4485 ext. 103 or an*********@un******************.org for more information.
Coffee with a Cop
Oct. 3 is National Coffee with a Cop Day and Windsor PD will be participating at the Starbuck’s near Oliver’s on Old Redwood Highway from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Stop by to visit with our local law enforcement.
According to its website, Coffee with A Cop was launched in Hawthorne, California in 2011 when officers from the Hawthorne Police Department were looking for ways to interact more successfully with the citizens they served each day. The Hawthorne Police Department hit upon a simple plan to break through the barriers that have been built over the years — a cup of coffee. Coffee with a Cop events are now held in all 50 states and have also expanded to outside the Unites States to Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Latin America.
