Local boy’s soccer teams turned in a pair of successful Sonoma
County League openers last week, as the Lions edged Sonoma, 3-2,
and the Tigers slipped past Petaluma in overtime, 4-2.
Tigers keep on rolling
They say that good teams find a way to win, and that is usually
the case for the Tiger soccer squad.
Analy entertained visiting Petaluma in the SCL opener on Sept.
9, getting a good battle from the stubborn Trojans. The Tigers
spotted Petaluma a first-half goal, but came right back with a pair
of goals, including a penalty kick from Taylor Varnadore and a shot
by Armando Coronel for a 2-1 halftime lead.
Analy continued to have the better of the action after
intermission, but it was the Trojans who would tally a late,
second-half goal to send it into overtime.
The Tigers put the hammer down in the two ten-minute overtime
periods, as Varnadore completed a hat-trick with a goal in each
extra frame to lift his team to a 4-2 win.
On Friday, Analy was back on the road at the annual Redding
Tournament, recording wins over Shasta, 1-0, McKinleyville, 8-0,
and Fortuna, 2-0 to propel the Tigers into the tourney title game.
Analy staged a good battle with Yuba City in the championship
clash, but would eventually fall, 1-0.
“We had our chances to beat Yuba,” said Tiger coach Peter
Meechan. “We scored and it was called back, and came close a few
times. Overall, it was a good tournament.”
The Tigers (8-1-1, 1-0) resumed league action on Sept. 16 (after
press time) against Casa Grande, and travel to defending SCL
champion Windsor this Friday, Sept. 18. Game times at Wilson Ranch
beginning with the JV are 5 and 7 p.m.
Lions torch Dragons in SCL opener
The Lions gave head coach Dan Calmeyer his first varsity league
victory on Friday, turning back visiting perennial power Sonoma,
3-2.
The Lions maintained a strong offensive attack throughout the
contest, and cashed in on their scoring opportunities with a pair
of goals from David Lopez and another from talented freshman Connor
Hennen.
The Lions (2-2-2, 1-0) will host Casa Grande this Friday, Sept.
18 (4/5:30 p.m.) and travel to Windsor next Wednesday, Sept.
23.
