It was a mixed bag for West County soccer teams as the Tigers
edged the Lions, 2-0, but fell to Sonoma, 3-2.
El Molino combined their SCL loss to the Tigers with an 8-2
non-league win over Summerfield Waldorf.
Tigers gain league split
Analy enjoyed a bitter-sweet week on the pitch, beginning with a
hard-fought, 3-2 setback to Sonoma on Sept. 30.
The Dragons took advantage of the Tigers’ slow start, finding
the net in the first half to grab a 1-0 lead at the break. Sonoma
went up by two scores midway through the second period before the
Tigers began a furious comeback.
Augustine Reyes broke through for an Analy goal at the 30-minute
mark of the second period, and the Tigers finished the game with a
relentless rally that would fall agonizingly short.
“We played well and probably did enough to at least tie the
game, but we ran out of time,” said Tiger coach Peter Meechan.
“Sonoma played solid defense.”
El Mo invaded Karlson Field on Friday night, the first meeting
between the teams this season. The Tigers got the upper hand in the
first period, benefitting from a textbook header goal on a
well-executed cross from Armando Coronel for a 1-0 halftime
lead.
The teams battled throughout a well-played second half, and the
Tigers effectively iced the game with five minutes left when Richy
Amador penetrated the El Mo back line and nailed a shot past Lion’s
goalie Easton Palmer. The Tigers hung on to notch the eventual, 2-0
win.
“El Molino played well,” said a gracious Meechan after the game.
“They’re a good team, well coached, with some outstanding players
and good spirit.”
On Sept. 29, El Mo turned back Summerfield Waldorf, 8-2. Leading
the offensive explosion were goal scorers David Lopez, Connor
Hennen, Miguel Rodriguez, and Julian Bauer.
The Lions (3-7-2, 1-5) will host Petaluma on Friday, Oct. 9 (4
p.m.) and travel to Casa Grande next Wednesday, Oct. 7 (5/7 p.m.)
while the Tigers (12-2-2, 4-1-1) visit Casa Grande on Oct. 9 and
host Windsor in a showdown on Oct. 14 (5/7 p.m.).
