When it comes to high school baseball, there¹s no rest for the
weary. Following a rainy Spring schedule that had both Analy and El
Mo baseball squads playing multiple games per week in the month of
May, the teams have not skipped a beat.
The West County squads kicked off the Joe DiMaggio League
campaign during the first week of June and will play more than 25
games by the end of the summer season in mid July. The ambitious
schedule averages out to about five games per week in the six-week
period.
The trick for Analy coach Jeff Barnes and El Mo skipper John
Thomas will be to strike a balance between trying to win games and
developing budding young talent. The summer league is a prime time
to move players around to different positions and allow veterans a
chance to work on any weaknesses in their game.
The El Mo Joe ³D² squad has already completed 14 games on its
summer circuit, posting a 5-9 record so far. Analy has started out
red hot, recording a 7-2 mark through its first nine games. The
Analy squad is sponsored by the Sebastopol Brewing Company, and the
team has adopted the nickname ³Brewers.²
The Lions and Brewers squared off on Wednesday in Sebastopol, as
Analy pulled out a 9-5 decision. Brad Graham tossed a complete game
to notch the victory, while Evan Englar threw four innings to take
the loss. Mike Romeo pitched the last two innings for El Mo in
mop-up duty.
Leading hitters for the Lions included: Jon Canelis (2 for 2),
Graham Hitman (1 for 2), Roger Dumas (1 for 1, 2 RBIs), Brent
Chastain (1 for 2, 2 RBIs) and Jon Uresti (2 for 3). Pacing the
Analy attack were: Cameron Cook (2 for 3, HR, 5 RBIs), Tom Walker
(3 for 4, 3B, RBI), Evan Gunter (1 for 3), Nick Mutz (2 for 4) and
Nick Barnes (2 for 4).
The two teams faced each other again on Sunday in a double-dip
in Forestville, with the Brewers posting a clean sweep, 14-2 and
9-3.
Graham (6 hits, 3Ks) tossed another complete game gem to notch
the victory in game one, while Jackson Stogner fired four innings
to get the win in the nightcap. Tony DeMarco took the loss for the
Lions.
Pacing the Brewers¹ hitting attack on the day were: Graham (5
for 5, 2 2Bs), Mutz (4 for 8, 2 2Bs), Barnes (6 for 11, 2 2Bs, 3B),
and Ryan McCown (6 for 10, 2 2Bs).
Leading Lions¹ hitters in game one were: Chaz Mathias (1 for 3,
RBI), Bret Williams (1 for 3, RBI), Matt Weger (1 for 2), Jake
Bohan (1 for 3), John Sundberg (1 for 3) and Uresti (1 for 3). El
Mo¹s offensive leaders in the nightcap were: Weger (2 for 3, 2
RBIs), Uresti (1 for 2), Williams (1 for 3) and DeMarco (1 for 2,
RBI).
Analy will entertain Sonoma this Saturday, June 24, in a
doubleheader, while the Lions play a pair at Windsor on Saturday
and come home to host Tamalpais in a twin bill on Sunday, June 25.
First pitch on both days is 11 a.m.
