Editor: Thank you for drawing attention recently to the issue of
surrendered dogs and feral cats. These animals are among the most
vulnerable creatures in our community and deserve our care.
Similar to other shelters and rescues throughout our region, we
at the Healdsburg Animal Shelter have similarly noted that economic
hardship is the prevailing reason why animals are brought to our
doorstep. During this economic downturn, many families have
downsized from a house to an apartment where landlords don’t
tolerate dogs. In addition, families experiencing job losses are
forced to give up their pets simply because they are no longer able
to afford medical care for their animals. Last year, 65 dogs and 59
cats were brought to us by their owners. These numbers do not
include the many strays and feral cats we recover.
The Healdsburg Animal Shelter is here to care for all of the
animals we take in – regardless of how they came to us – until we
can place them with a caring and permanent home.
