Editor: This is a note for your readers that an awesome force,
an historian, an author, passed away on January 28, 2010 at the age
of 87. His name: Howard Zinn.
Now the readers may be saying, “Who is this guy?” and/or “Why is
he such an important man?” The answer: With his numerous historical
works he introduced millions of Americans to an alternative
interpretation of American history. Among those many are school
students, particularly students in the upper grade levels. Among
his several works is his most famous: “A People’s History of the
United States” accounts of how ordinary people (not presidents or
generals) affected the course, the development, the accomplishments
of mainstream Americans.
A plaque is posted of Howard Zinn in the main hall of Healdsburg
High School as testimony to his importance. Stop by and view it.
For you see, I used “A People’s History” and some of his other
works to teach U.S. history (and herstory) for most of my 45 years
at the “Home of the Hounds.”
