Fermentation fervor is coming to Sebastopol.
Self-proclaimed “fermentation fetishist” Sandor Ellix Katz will
offer a free sauerkraut-making demonstration at the Whole Foods
Market in Sebastopol on Saturday, Jan. 17. He is the author of a
new book: “Wild Fermentation: The Flavor, Nutrition, and Craft of
Live-Culture Foods.” “Fermentation has been an important journey of
discovery for me,” said Katz, a long-term AIDS survivor, who
considers live-culture foods an important part of his healing. He
will present a demonstration, “Making Live-Culture Sauerkraut” at
the market, located at 6901 McKinley St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Included in the free demonstration will be tastes of homemade
ferments, and discussion of the nutritional benefits and
illustrious history of fermented foods. Katz is touring the country
offering free workshops and talks at food co-ops, farmers markets,
health food stores, bookstores, community centers, and other
venues.
