Tonight is the big kickoff game at Rec Park for the Healdsburg Prune Packers’ 2024 summer baseball season. Our town mayor will be throwing the first pitch, as is tradition. The Prune Packers are a century-old team playing in the California Collegiate League, which is basically a warmup ground for the big leagues and a place for top college players to stay sharp in the off-season. The team’s tagline is “Where Summer Fun Hits a Home Run Since 1921.” And our guys aren’t half bad: They’ve won the state title for the past three years in a row. They’ve also amassed a pretty loyal fan base at the local level; their games always pack the stands at Rec, giving big “Take me out…” vibes. Healdsburg Brewing Company historically stocks the beer for home games, and the food is served by a rotation of favorite local restaurants. Team leaders posted on Facebook last week: “Your home team is ready to have its best summer baseball season yet and we can’t wait to see YOU at Rec Park in Healdsburg on June 5th, at 6PM!!” Healdsburg Mayor David Hagele is throwing out the First Pitch of the season! Kona Ice of Central Santa Rosa and Tacos San Juan will be there, too!” They also posted this fast fact about the mayor: “Did you know our very own Mayor David Hagele and his wonderful family host Prune Packer players every summer? And his amazing daughter, Charlotte, will be helping with Game Day Operations again this summer! What an incredible community!” After playing the San Francisco Seals in their opening game tonight, the Packers are scheduled to play another string of games at Rec almost every night through the end of June. They have a bunch of home games in July, as well. Check out the full schedule here. Tomorrow night’s game will be Guy Fieri themed; proceeds will benefit his foundation for kids culinary education, and he’ll be there in person to throw the first pitch. Then the night after THAT is ’80s night, where everyone dresses up and listens to ’80s music. It’s a whole thing. Summer must really be upon us… (Source: Healdsburg Prune Packers & Healdsburg Prune Packers via Facebook)
