Art Jewett was born in Rochester, New York. He received his BA from the University of Rochester. He entered the U.S. Army in 1957, where he served for 11 years, in the Medical Service Corps, and then at the U.S. Army Medical Research Lab at Fort Knox, Kentucky and was stationed, with his young family, for 2 ½ years in Heilbronn, Germany. He left the service in 1968 when his involvement with the antiwar movement led him to resign his commission. Subsequently, he spent most of his career as administrator in various health services.
He married Barbara Wood of Rochester, New York in 1955. They had four children and were divorced in 1973. He married Elizabeth (Bette) Dunlop Washburn in 1974, adding three stepchildren to his family.
Having been the captain of the soccer team and of his championship swim team in high school, Art always enjoyed exercise and could be found daily walking briskly in Clover Springs, often worrying his neighbors by reading Scientific American as he walked. He and his wife, Bette, loved camping, and explored local, state, and national parks and drove cross-country several times. He enjoyed all types of music, and with Bette, sang in the choir at the United Church of Cloverdale. He read widely, and was open minded and well informed.
Art was preceded in death by his wife, Bette, his brother, Gordon, and his stepsons Mark and John Washburn. He is survived by his four children, Brian Paul (Leanne), Andrew Gordon (Suzanne), Karen Lee Lindo, and Glen Earold (Wanda); and a stepson, James (Chris) Washburn, as well as one granddaughter, two grandsons, and a great granddaughter on the Jewett side of the family, and four granddaughters, one grandson, two great granddaughters, and a great grandson on the Washburn side of the family.
A man of strong principles, he never lost his passion for fighting for racial and women’s equality, and for the rights of LGBT individuals. He was active in the United Church of Cloverdale and in his community, serving on the board of Clover Springs and also on the Sonoma County Civil Service Commission.
Art was loved by many and will be greatly missed by his family and numerous friends.
A Celebration of Art’s Life will be held on May 27, 1:00 pm at the United Church of Cloverdale, 439 North Coverdale Boulevard, Cloverdale, CA 95425 followed by light refreshments in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Art’s name to the United Church of Cloverdale or to hospice, Sutter Care at Home, 110 Stony Point Rd, Suite 200C, Santa Rosa CA 95401.
