Matilda “Tillie” Iversen de Long Daniels passed away at her home
in Healdsburg on Monday, July 19, 2004. She was a teacher, athlete,
scholar, gardener, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and
Rebekah. Tillie was one of four children born to Frances and
Ferdinand Iversen on January 21, 1909 in Caspar. She was the loving
wife of the late Winfield Daniels and mother of Duane de Long of
Santa Rosa; grandmother to James and his wife Leslie de Long of
Forestville and to Jay de Long of Sebastopol; great-grandmother to
Annelise and Milo de Long of Forestville; also survived by her
sister-in-law Evelyn Iversen of Healdsburg and nieces and nephews
Elaine Nordeen, Francis McLean, Neil and Dale Iversen, as well as
stepchildren George and Shirley Hagar and Richard and Marilyn
Carlson. After graduating from Fort Bragg High School in 1926, she
graduated from College of Pacific (now U.O.P.) in 1930 with a major
in mathematics and double minor in physics and physical education.
She received her general secondary credential in 1931 and her
masters in mathematics in 1933. Tillie was a female athlete before
it was fashionable, having lettered in basketball at U.O.P. and
played tennis with four-time U.S. tennis champion and Wimbledon
champion Alice Marble. She was also a member of Epsilon Lambda
Sigma (Delta Gamma) sorority at Pacific. Tillie was a math teacher
at Healdsburg High School from 1931 until 1964 and also taught
geometry at the Santa Rosa Junior College. She was a 50+-year
member of the Liberty Rebekah Lodge #78 in Healdsburg and served as
the District Deputy President. She was an officer in the Delta
Kappa Gamma Honor Society for Women Teachers, the first educational
group in Sonoma County to honor women educators of the world. She
was a life member of the California Teacher’s Association, the
Sonoma County Teacher’s Association, member of Eastern Star and
charter member of the Healdsburg Historical Society. Tillie’s
hobbies included genealogy, camping, gardening, sports, bridge and
volunteering. She passed away peacefully in her sleep in the home
she had built in Healdsburg after spending a very active weekend
with her family at her son’s home in Santa Rosa. Friends are
invited to attend graveside services at Oak Mound Cemetery in
Healdsburg on August 5, at 10 a.m. This will be followed at 11 a.m.
until 3 p.m. by a celebration of her life in her home on Brown
Street in Healdsburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
the “Matilda Daniels Scholarship Fund” PO Box 574, Santa Rosa, CA
95403. A scholarship will be given annually to a deserving
