James H. “Murphy” Alderson – mechanical engineer

James Howard “Murphy” Alderson of Healdsburg passed away on
December 8, 2002 at the age of 80. A native of Denair, California,
James lived in Healdsburg since 1978 and previously lived in
Modesto and Hughson. He worked as an engineer, specializing in the
design of grain mills and wineries. He worked for the Grange Co.
for 26 years and the E&J Gallo Winery for 22 years. He was the
past president of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association
Branch 31. He was active in various youth activities including the
Boy Scouts and 4-H in Modesto. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of
World War II, serving as a flight engineer in the Pacific Theater.
James enjoyed traveling, fishing, and aviation. He restored,
collected, and encouraged the preservation of early gas engines and
farm machinery of historical value. He also displayed his
collections, rode motorized vehicles of his designs in parades, and
offered educational programs to children on how engines work. He is
survived by his wife Velma M. Alderson of Healdsburg, children
Robert D. Alderson of Sequim, Washington, Lynne Alderson Layne of
Turlock, and Les Alderson of Modesto. He is also survived by his
sisters Eugenia “Geno” Junk of Sparks, Nevada, Mary A. Murray of
Modesto, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two brothers. A private burial was held in
Modesto. Donations can be made to the Hughson High School Genzoli
Scholarship in the Agriculture Department at 7419 Whitmore Avenue,
Hughson, CA 95326.
