As of July 1 Alexander Valley School (AVS) will welcome a new superintendent and principal for the Alexander Valley School, Matt Reno.
The board of trustees of Alexander Valley Union School District (AVUSD) approved his three-year agreement unanimously and say they are excited to welcome Reno to AVS.
“Our community can rest assured that the district will be in very capable, experienced hands with Mr. Reno at the helm,” said board president Yvonne Kreck.
According to a press release from the school district, throughout his over 20-year career in education, Reno has worked toward a single goal: to improve student achievement through strong leadership and excellent instruction.
Reno began his career in education as a fourth grade teacher in Arizona in 1992. Since then he progressed to holding more administrative positions, becoming a junior high school vice-principal in 1995 and an elementary school principal in 1996.
Reno then moved to Santa Rosa in 2001 to become the principal at Spring Creek School in the Rincon Valley School District.
After five years at Spring Creek, he moved on to Sequoia Elementary School and the Rincon Valley Charter School where he has since remained.
Kreck said that Reno’s professional areas of expertise are an excellent match for the needs of Alexander Valley.
He has been described by the AVUSD as being an outstanding leader with excellent communication skills; he has significant experience with curriculum and instruction, fundraising and supervision. Reno said he sees the district as a wonderful opportunity to apply his leadership skills and experience.
“I am delighted to be able to provide leadership and service to our board of trustees, staff, as well as our students and their families.”
Reno follows the eight-year leadership of former Superintendent Bob Raines. Raines will be transferring to Shoreline Unified School District where he started his educational career almost 20 years ago.
“I am excited to return to Shoreline in the role of superintendent. Even though AVS is a hard place to leave. The kids are amazing and everyone is willing to step up to help the kids,” said Raines.
A welcome reception for Reno is planned for August just before school starts.
