A large Scarlet Oak, one of a group of three such trees, toppled over in a storm Monday night in the Healdsburg Plaza. The tree reportedly fell around 1 a.m. although social media posts on Facebook suggest 11 p.m.
The tree, planted at the northeast corner of the Plaza, stretched all the way across Center Street after it fell, causing minor damage to wood trim in front of Mr. Moon’s, a downtown store. The tree also bent a wrought iron fence, uprooted a smaller tree and broke branches on trees across Center Street.
Healdsburg Fire Department and Public Works crews worked through the night to clear the street and clean up the debris. The stump and about 10 feet of trunk remained on the Plaza as of Wednesday morning, awaiting further cleanup.
