The Healdsburg Museum and Historical Society presented Diane Schmidt Carriger and Maggie Susan Bates with the 2017 Langhart Award at its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on July 8.
The Langhart Award recognizes the tradition of outstanding volunteer service that defined the society’s founder Edwin Langhart, who was dedicated to preserving the rich past of the city of Healdsburg through the collection, preservation and study of historical and cultural artifacts, photographs, and documentary records.
Both Bates and Carriger have been museum volunteers since 2010. Carriger has been involved in virtually every aspect of the museum’s work – collections, research, exhibitions and events. Her work on the digitizing of the town’s newspaper records and photographic patrimony has been invaluable. Bates’ trove of creative talents has enhanced the museum’s many exhibitions, publications and graphic materials immeasurably.
This year’s award and appreciation dinner was held at the Castelli Ranch off Eastside Road. Steve and Glenda Castelli have assembled multiple collections of Americana in their home and several outbuildings, which they open to the public on special occasions. The Castellis provided guided tours for the attendees. John Youngblood & Co. entertained with music during the festivities.
Over 100 Healdsburgers are volunteers at the museum, and contribute their time and effort to help foster the sense of community within Healdsburg. The annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner affords the opportunity to celebrate their achievements. Those interested in becoming a volunteer can contact the museum at 431-3325 or
