At the May 16 meeting of the Healdsburg Unified School District Board of Trustees the agenda is filled to the brim with end-of-the-year housekeeping items.
While not agendized, the public comment section may prove to be a hot topic following a controversial ruling at the last meeting to guarantee funding to Healdsburg Charter School, during an item that was meant to prioritize funding for various endeavors at all the schools, should money become available following the governor’s revised budget.
During the May 9 meeting, the committee for funding prioritization and the Board were largely in agreement, save for the charter school upper grade configuration, which the committee ranked the least important and the board ranked most important. The “averaged rank” still should have placed it last, but the board elected to fund it immediately.
“The board did direct district administration to create the additional charter school teaching position at fourth grade,” said Superintendent Chris Vanden Heuvel in an email to the Tribune. “The reasoning behind the decision was to avoid having a multi-grade (4/5) combination class. While funding is somewhat uncertain still, the Governor’s May revision as well as preliminary property tax figures look favorable in terms of additional revenue coming into the district.”
In the regular board meeting, under the heading of “Student Learning,” a revision to the district homework policy will be discussed, as will staff training and development on social emotional learning techniques and strategies. There will be a proposal for dual enrollment for HHS students at Santa Rosa Junior College.
Under the heading of “Personnel,” a resolution declaring Classified School Employee Week for May 20-26 will be discussed, and the annual “declaration of need” for certain certificated teaching positions will be brought forward.
Under “School Business” the Third Interim Report of the district’s finances and budget will be presented and the “specification of election order” will be voted on. There will also be a discussion on the 2018-19 Transportation Fee Schedule.w
There will be a public hearing on the various collective bargaining agreements, as well as a vote taken on the salary schedules for various types of employees for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years.
The next meeting of the Healdsburg Unified School District Board of Trustees will take place Wednesday, May 16, at Healdsburg City Hall, 401 Grove Street.
