Old printer competes with snorkel and ‘jar of poop’ for most unusual items found
On Saturday, Sept. 22 civic groups, community members and city staff turned out for the annual Foss Creek Cleanup.
In its 16th year, the annual cleanup aims to remove trash and debris from Foss Creek, which runs through Healdsburg.
Foss Creek is a tributary of the Russian River, and removing trash prior to the rainy season prevents that trash from ending up in the river and, ultimately, the ocean.
The Crud Cup is awarded annually to the group that collects the most trash, which this year was a mixed group of “Team Three,” with over 30 bags of trash collected.
An award is also given for most unusual item found, and the contenders this year included an ancient car radio, a full set of fins, snorkel and mask, a printer and what was described by its young finder as a “jar of poop.”
The snorkel set was initially dubbed the winner, but when none of the team members were available to receive the award, it was given to the printer instead. The most spirited team was the Girl Scouts.
Concurrent with and immediately following the Foss Creek Cleanup was the annual Healdsburg Kiwanis Safety Fair. There were giveaways of bike helmets and car seats for children (the latter installed by the California Highway Patrol) and a bike rodeo for children. There were raffle prizes, safety demonstrations, disaster preparedness information, free bike repairs and more.
