Let’s Preserve, a community canning event with Farm to Pantry, sponsored in part by the Soroptimist International of Healdsburg will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Healdsburg High School culinary kitchen.
It will be a day to remember with chef Tim Wilcox lending his expertise to lead newcomers and inspire experienced hands in this traditional culinary skill. At noon, volunteers will take a break and participate in a potluck lunch.
At day’s end the jars of freshly preserved tomatoes will be ferried to the Healdsburg Food Pantry for distribution over the coming months.
Anyone who has surplus tomatoes in their gardens is invited and encouraged to share their bounty for this event. Tomatoes should be dropped off in advance at the Healdsburg Food Pantry, 1505 Healdsburg Avenue on Friday, Oct. 5, from 9 to 11 a.m.
The canning will be done in two overlapping shifts, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and noon to 4 p.m., so volunteers can choose to come for all or part of the day. The communal meal will take place at noon, so everyone is asked to bring a bit of lunch to share.
“Come to tell your past canning stories and to create new ones with your neighbors. The results of our labors will be preserving a skill and preserving our community and of course, preserving tomatoes for our local food pantry and the families in our community that are in need of a good meal,” said a press release from Farm to Pantry.
Those interested in volunteering for this event should call or email to sign-up in advance: 760-880-0518 or

Organizers are also looking for volunteers to transport tomatoes, jars and neighbors to Healdsburg High School. For additional information contact Dani Wilcox of Farm to Pantry.
