Josephine Osborn passed away at her home in Healdsburg on
Tuesday, June 20 at the age of 94. Josephine was born in Glendora,
CA on Oct. 9, 1912, moved to Modoc County, and eventually settled
in Sebastopol, where she was a graduate of Analy High School.
It was in Sebastopol where she met and was married to Earl
Osborn in 1934, and their union lasted nearly 70 years. The couple
lived in Healdsburg their whole married life where Earl taught and
retired as principal of Healdsburg High School.
During her lifetime, Josephine, who was “Jo” to
everyone, was active in a variety of activities and organizations
in and around Healdsburg including the Healdsburg Golf Club,
numerous bridge clubs, little theater groups, the Campfire Girls
and the Assistance League.
For a number of years she was the librarian of the children’s
section of the main library and concluded her work career as a
dental assistant. She even picked prunes during World War II to
support the war effort.
She was always fun-loving with an uplifting sense of humor.
Josephine and Earl enjoyed a retirement including time spent at
their home in Anchor Bay where they made abalone jewelry, jaunts to
Giants spring training, weeks in Hawaii and a trip around the
United States. Josephine had many good friends with whom she shared
lots of happy times, although she lost most of those closest and
dearest contemporaries as her years advanced.
She is survived by her daughter, Merle Hayes of Santa Rosa, and
Donald Osborn with whom she was living in Healdsburg. In addition
she will be mourned by her granddaughter Kathy Hayes, and her two
sons John and Logan of Santa Rosa; Brendan Hayes and his wife
Heidi, son Blake and daughter Audrey in San Diego; and her
granddaughter Andrea Hayes of Santa Rosa. Josephine’s sister Gladys
Vice of Sebastopol will also prayerfully remember her.
Josephine will be buried in the family cemetery in Graton, while
a memorial service is planned in the near future.
Any donations in remembrance of Josephine should be made to the
Healdsburg Senior Center.
